AMHERST, N.Y. (WKBW) — The COVID-19 pandemic has hit local food banks hard.

That's why this year, during the Rock Out Hunger food drive, Feedmore WNY needs donations more than ever before.

"There's so much need this year," said Anne McKenna, Chief Communications officer for Feedmore. "We'll be there to help you, no matter your age, no matter your need, we'll be there to provide you food assistance."

Turkey, stuffing, canned goods and other essentials are being dropped off by Western New Yorkers outside Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital for the annual Rock Out Hunger food drive. 7 Eyewitness News is a proud partner of this event.

This year, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Rock Out Hunger drive is a little different than in years past. This year, it is a contactless drive. You do not have to get out of your car. Volunteers will come and grab the food for you. They ask you please wear a mask.

Feedmore says more and more people are needing assistance due to financial hardships. Some, are experiencing hunger for the first time.

"We've seen a 47% increase in our food distribution numbers for this year," McKenna said.

Feedmore says in 2019, it distributed more than 12 million meals. This year, it has already met that threshold, serving more than 15.5 million meals.

Volunteers and 97 Rock's DJ Jickster are collection donations starting for a week Tuesday.

You can drop off any non-perishable food donation or cash at any time.
