LOCKPORT, N.Y. (WKBW) — A facial recognition system that has been debated for months is now in place in the Lockport City School District. The district sent a letter to parents and guardians of students, saying the AEGIS software has been implemented.

The camera system is meant to identify a potential threat against students and staff, but has run into resistance. The State Education Department told the school district to stop testing the system last summer.

In August the Lockport Board of Education voted to encrypt any information that is stored on the facial recognition program.
