BATAVIA, N.Y. (WKBW) — Batavia Police are going to be in the area between State Street and Ross Street today, searching evidence in what they say is an assault and robbery.
Police say Sunday night, 30-year-old Benjamin Santiago Jr. showed up at a home on Ellicott Street and demanded money from Mark Collier, who lived there. When Collier refused to give him money, police say Santiago hit him a number of times with an object, stole a number of things from the home, and ran off. Collier was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.
Police say after Santiago took off he stole a bike, then stole a car from a Batavia home. Police in the City of Rochester later recognized the stolen car, and arrested him.
Santiago is charged with assault and robbery. He's being held in the Genesee County Jail without bail, and is scheduled to be back in court in Batavia Monday afternoon.
Police will be back in the area of State Street and Ross Street searching for any evidence related to the crimes. They're asking anyone who comes across something that they think might be connected to the crime not to move or touch them, and to call police. You can reach the Batavia Police Department at 585-345-6350.
