GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. (WKBW) — The Erie County Sheriff's Office says deputies have responded to numerous reports of stolen vehicles in Grand Island.

Since January 1 the sheriff's office says it has responded to 10 reports of stolen vehicles, of those eight are due to individuals leaving the keys in the vehicle.

“Unfortunately, people are leaving valuables and keys in the car,” said Sheriff Howard. “Anytime items are left in plain view, nefarious individuals are going to take the opportunity to commit a crime.”

Two minors were arrested on April 10 and charged with grand larceny, criminal mischief, criminal possession of stolen property, and unauthorized use of a vehicle following a report of a stolen vehicle on April 9.

In addition to the stolen vehicles, deputies have responded to numerous car larcenies as well.

“The thieves are not breaking windows or popping locks. Instead, they are simply pulling the door handle, and if the door opens, the criminals are going in.”

The sheriff's office reminds motorists to remove all valuables from your vehicle, don't leave the keys inside and lock it.
