ALDEN, N.Y. (WKBW) — The Erie County Sheriff’s Office will conduct an internal investigation after an inmate was found unresponsive in a cell at the Erie County Correctional Facility, according to Sheriff Tim Howard.
The sheriff’s office reports the inmate was found unresponsive in their cell shortly after the lunchtime lockdown on Friday.
The inmate died by apparent suicide, according to the sheriff’s office spokesperson.
The Jail Management Division and Correctional Health personnel immediately responded to the inmate’s cell and initiated life-saving measures.
According to officials, the inmate was admitted to the correctional facility on August 1, 2019, on a parole violation and was actively followed by Forensic Mental Health.
The incident is currently under investigation.
