GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. (WKBW) — A Grand Island man is dead after a one-car crash on East River Road just past the South Grand Island Bridge. Volunteer firefighters and paramedics responded to the crash around 8:15 p.m. Tuesday, and found 48-year-old Joseph Berard behind the wheel of the SUV was unconscious and not breathing.
Grand Island Fire Company firefighters extricated the man and called Mercy Flight, but the helicopter was canceled en route after Berard was pronounced dead at the scene.
Emergency crews had closed East River Road near the bridge while they responded to the scene, but it was later reopened.
The Erie County Sheriff's Office is now investigating the cause of the accident.
