LOCKPORT, N.Y. (WKBW) — Summer nights are right around the corner... which means big box office movies and drive-in movie theaters. The Transit Drive-In theater in Lockport is set to open next weekend, Friday, April 5.

For the beginning of the season the drive-in will operate generally on weekends until temperatures warm up. Owner, Rick Cohen, is predicting a busy summer because of major movies set to premiere including Avengers, Godzilla, Toy Story 4 and the Lion King.

“[The] magic formula is kids being out of school, weekend night, nice weather and a big new movie, you hit all those at the same time and this place will be jammed," Cohen said.

The Transit Drive-In is one of two drive-in movie theaters remaining locally, in a place that used to boast of more than 20. Cohen says property values are the main driving factor that determine a drive-in's longevity. Cohen describes the location of the Transit Drive-In between Lockport and Amherst as 'no-mans-land' and that he's very lucky the property his family has owned since 1957 isn't in a developing area.

Tickets for a double feature (two movies) will be $10 for adults and $6 for children, ages five 5-11.
