NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (WKBW) — Charlie is an 11 month old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. He's Mary Torcasio's best bud.

“He's really good company,” said Torcasio in her Niagara Falls, New York home.

She needs the company. A year and a half ago her husband of 57 years, died.

“All I did was cry and cry for months,” remembered Torcasio.

Tuesday, Charlie and Mary were getting ready for a nap on the recliner.

“He jumped down, which woke me. And he went into the kitchen and he was barking and barking and barking. I said don't tell me we got a mouse,” recalled Torcasio.

It wasn't a mouse.

“The kitchen was just full of gas.”

Just before the nap, Mary wanted a snack.

“I opened up my cupboard and I reached up to get something and I bumped the burner,” said Torcasio.

Most days, Mary lights candles. By complete chance, she didn't Tuesday. She can't imagine what would have happened, if she did and if Charlie wasn't around.

“I hugged him and kissed him and told him he was an angel from heaven. I just love him,” said Mary.

So on Wednesday, Mary got oven knob covers and Charlie got all the treats.
