BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — The DMV office in downtown Buffalo was evacuated Monday morning due to a "suspicious package".

According to the Erie County Sheriff's office, the suspicious package was a backpack that had been dropped outside the the Rath Building near the corner of West Eagle and Pearl Streets, near the DMV office. Investigators say the backpack was actually stolen from inside the Rath Building and was dropped by a male who was running from the building.

Because of the suspicious nature of the incident, the DMV office was evacuated and nearby streets were closed.

The backpack has been returned to it's owner and the larceny is under investigation.
