GOWANDA, N.Y. (WKBW) — After a couple hours of searching for two children in Cattaraugus Creek in Gowanda, officers say it was a "false call."

Dennis Feldmann, the Village of Gowanda Police Chief, says the concerned resident who first reported the need for a rescue operation was "confused."

Feldmann told 7 Eyewitness News that the woman said she saw two children go over the Veterans Memorial bridge.

The initial call came into authorities shortly after 4:00 p.m. Thursday. Several agencies, including the Cattaraugus County Sheriff's Office, responded.

The search operation was called off at around 6:45 p.m. No charges have been filed at this time. The woman who made the initial call is cooperating with police.
