YATES, N.Y. (AP) — Officials say a college student apparently drowned while fly-fishing in Western New York.

According to the Orleans County Sheriff's Office, Jared Fearby, of Kent, and his grandfather were fly-fishing in Johnson Creek in Yates on Friday morning.

The pair eventually started fishing in separate spots, and Fearby fell into the water.

His grandfather was unable to find him and called authorities.

The 21-year-old Fearby's body was found half in the water.

A cause of death has not been confirmed.

Fearby studied biology conservation at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse.
