CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WKBW) — A 21-year-old woman is dead after a 2-car crash in Cheektowaga.

Police say the woman, identified as Jacquelyn McClain of Buffalo, was a passenger in a Honda Accord that was being driven by a 22-year old woman from Buffalo when they ran a red light at Dingens St. and Rossler Ave., just after 8pm Tuesday night.

Their vehicle, which was traveling north on Rossler, was driving at a "high rate of speed" when they collided with a Chevrolet Equinox that was being driven by a 29-year-old woman, according to police. McClain was ejected from the car and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A manager working Tuesday night at the Save-A-Lot on Rossler Avenue says both women in the car that caused the accident were caught shoplifting moments prior to the crash.

“I noticed that the passenger door was open, so that sparked my curiosity- is this a hostage situation what’s going on here? That car is traveling pretty fast," said Duane Gibson, the first person on the scene who was outside the Best Western across the street, smoking a cigarette when the crash occurred. “Knowing someone needed my help, there wasn’t a thought ‘should I go over?’ It was almost like my legs moved before my brain could process that we were headed there.”

The accident remains under investigation by The Cheektowaga Police Accident Investigation Unit.
