BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — We’re seeing a lot of people showing their Buffalo Strong spirit this holiday season. Some do it by shopping local, others are giving back to families in their community. 7 Eyewitness News met one family who set out to do both at the same time.

"It’s really nice to give back to our community whenever we can," said Steve Nurkin, father of three.

Meet the A-Team: there’s Andrew Nurkin, 10, Abigail Nurkin, 8 and April Nurkin, 6. With the help of mom and dad, Lori and Steve Nurkin, these three set out on a holiday mission.

"We were thinking about how people were struggling, especially this year, so we decided we could help the families that need it," said Abigail.

So they started the A-Team fundraiser to do two things:

  1. Collect donations for families
  2. Use that money to buy gift cards from local businesses

"Because of Coronavirus, a lot of people aren’t going to the businesses,” explained Abigail.

So by buying gift cards, they’re supporting local businesses and helping families at the same time. The young trio says it feels good to help people and local businesses are feeling the love.

"It’s amazing and it does make a difference. To have as much effort from organizations and community people and families, I’ve never seen anything like it in the 25 years that we’ve been here," said Gaetana Schueckler, Co-Owner of the Treehouse Toy Store.

They A-team is planning on buying gift cards from:

  • Treehouse Toy Store
  • What's Poppin Gourmet Popcorn
  • The Globe Market
  • BuyBlackBuffalo.com

And they're looking for suggestions of more businesses to support.

The gift cards they buy from local businesses will go to help their classmates.

"We thought that probably a lot of people in Buffalo Public Schools needed help," said Abigail.

So far, they've raised more than $2,000 and they’re looking for donations on Venmo and Pay Pal.

"Support the A-Team fundraiser so we can support our local small businesses and also the BPS families,” said Steve Nurkin.

Their Venmo is @ATeamFundraiser

Their PayPal is Paypal.me/ATeamFundraiser

“We will all get through this together, thank you for your support, love the A-Team," said Abigail.
