BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — In a show of appreciation and gratitude, the Buffalo Police and Fire Departments honored nurses at ECMC Wednesday evening.

"Our nurses are amazing people, they work in very, very difficult conditions right now. The world is getting to see how important nursing is," said Tom Quatroche, CEO of ECMC.

Similar salutes also happened at Buffalo General and Mercy Hospital.

"They're fully gowned, all day long. Eight hours, 12 hours a day," said Quatroche.

"We know that you have worked through exhaustion, you've worked though missing your families," said Mayor Byron Brown to the nurses.

Particularly now during the COVID-19 pandemic - and the life-saving work that they do - the city, BPD and the fire department wanted to show how much it means to the community.

"The Buffalo Police Department, the Fire Department, our first responders are a significant part of how we save lives in Western New York. They're on the front-lines just as much as we are," said Quatroche.
