Body recovered in Lake Ontario Sunday identified as missing Rochester man

(WKBW) — The Orleans County Sheriff's Office reports a body was recovered in Lake Ontario Sunday.

The sheriff's office says around 9:30 Sunday morning those out fishing reported a body floating in the lake three miles off shore north of Point Breeze. The body was recovered by the Orleans County Sheriff's Office Marine Patrol and New York State Police and returned to Point Breeze.

According to the sheriff's office the body recovered has been identified as missing Rochester man, 32-year-old Serhiy Smyk.

Smyk was fishing with a group of friends at the Niagara River Gorge on June 21st, state police say the group stayed in the gorge overnight and the group reported Smyk missing the next morning.

The Monroe County Medical Examiner's Office stated the cause of death is still pending as they await toxicology results. The investigation into the incident is on-going.

According to a GoFundMe, Smyk was married and leaves behind a wife and five children.
