HAMBURG, N.Y. (WKBW) — Despite the pandemic, the beach looks the same. Woodlawn Beach in Hamburg is busy this holiday weekend. With families flocking to the Lake Erie shore to beat the heat, social distancing is top of mind.

“I haven't really noticed, honestly. Our group came in, we kept our distance from other groups and out on the water it's been the same so it hasn't really felt that much different,” said Brett Nolan.

“It's not that different. Everyone keeps their distance. People playing catch keep their distance and try not to throw their ball in other areas and everyone's careful with it,” said Anthony Clontz.

“I feel really safe here. I don't feel like I'm at risk of getting it especially because it's outdoors and the wind. I don't think it's congested,” said Kelsey Zabawa.

Friday the weather was the perfect day to head to the shore. The breeze and water cooled people off.

“It doesn't feel like it's really hot so it's super nice,” said Zabawa.

“We're playing volleyball, football all together just having a good time,” Gabrielle Sordetto said.

To some groups, coming to Woodlawn is one of the few holiday traditions they got to partake in this year.

“This is the weekend everyone tends to have available during the summer. This has been a long running tradition for our friend group. We've been coming here for about 4-5 years,” said Nolan.

It's a great chance to catch up with friends people haven't seen in a while.

“When we weren't seeing our friends it was just down. It wasn't the same. Now that we're able to at least be out at the beach. It feels good. It feels good to see some of our closest friends at the time,” said Clontz.
