BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — A backpack giveaway and community celebration will be held in Buffalo Thursday.

The event will take place August 27 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 1100 Jefferson, the Johnnie B. Wiley Sports Pavilion.

500 backpacks with school supplies from the Teacher's Desk will be given away as well as free Project Play sport “play packs." Also available on behalf of the Buffalo Bills Foundation will be free boxed dinners and $25 gift cards for Top Markets to the first 100 families.

The Police Athletic League of Buffalo will be on hand to conduct physical activities on the football field.

Organizers say the gifts are for children and they must be present to receive them. All that attend must maintain social distancing and wear mask, hand sanitizer and masks will be provided.

This event is being held on behalf of several corporate sponsors.

“The corporate community stepped up in a resounding way this year, all giving hundreds of dollars so that we could make sure as many children as possible receive a backpack from Teacher’s Desk with school supplies," said Theresa Land, event planner for Johnnie B. Wiley.
