NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (WKBW) — Work is now underway on a new interactive habitat at the Aquarium of Niagara. The Aquarium's team marked the start of construction on the new, "M&T Bank Shark & Ray Bay" on Friday. The exhibit will allow guests to have a hands-on experience with a collection of marine life including; sharks, stingrays, and more.

The $1.85 million exhibit is backed by funding from Empire State Development, M&T Bank, Niagara County and others. It also marks the third major project at the aquarium over the past three years, including Penguin Coast and Aliens of the Sea.

Each year, the aquarium, on Whirlpool Street in Niagara Falls, welcomes more than 305,000 visitors and that number is expected to grow with the addition of the new "M&T Bank Shark & Ray Bay."

Construction is expected to be finished in early summer of 2020.
