AMHERST, N.Y. (WKBW) — Amherst police have issued a warning to residents on a scam that has been reported.

Police say a resident reported an unknown caller impersonated an Amherst police officer, claiming there was an immigration issue and if the resident did not pay a fine they would be arrested.

The unknown caller was able to mirror the department's non-emergency number and Amherst Police Dept. appeared on the resident's caller ID, police say.

Amherst Police say if you receive this type of call, do not give them any personal information and call the department to verify the call did not originate from APD.
