(WKBW) — Family and friends of a World War II hero wanted to make sure he had a special 100th birthday.

A police escort led the way in a parade honoring Stanley Markut.

Dozens of vehicles drove by as Markut waved from the porch in Sloan, despite the snow.

Markut fought with the Polish army during World War II and was part of the invasion of Normandy, or D-Day.

He also founded the Polish Saturday School in Buffalo.
