BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — A new data assessment from the U.S. News and World Report has Buffalo-based Roswell Park as the 14th best hospital in the country for cancer care.

The ranking comes from the study reviewing patient-driven outcomes and other data for 885 cancer centers throughout the country.

Roswell Park also received high performance grades in two subcategories: lung cancer surgery and colon cancer surgery.

“We take our responsibility to provide outstanding care and support services for patients in our community so seriously, and to see that effort acknowledged in what the U.S. News team saw when they compared us to other top centers is so rewarding,” said Roswell Park President and CEO, Candace S. Johnson, PhD.

What does Roswell Park do best according to the assessment? The cancer center received 'excellent' grades in 30-day survival, discharging patients to home, and patient experience.

"It's a completely different kind of care than you get in the general medical community," said Dr. Stephen Edgle, VP of Health Care Outcomes.

"We offer multidisciplinary care. All we do is cancer," Johnson said.

Multidisciplinary care means that a team of doctors care for patients at Roswell Park. They coordinate everything from diagnosis to surgery to chemo therapy and much more.

"That team approach most likely saved my life," said Kevin Hays, who has been a cancer patient at Roswell Park for five years. He has colorectal cancer.

He went to Roswell for a second opinion and stayed.

"I 100% know that Roswell had an impact on extending my life," Hays said.

He is currently receiving chemotherapy at Roswell after learning his cancer returned. He said his current treatment is showing progress and is hopefull for the future.

"I want to end up being one of those statistics that helps boost Roswell from 14th place even higher - to single digits," Hays said.

Roswell Park was the only cancer center in upstate New York to be ranked in the top 50, and is ranked second in the state of New York, behind only Memorial Sloan-Kettering in New York City which ranked second nationwide.
