NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WKBW) — The Niagara County Sheriff's Office says there is an investigation into a drowning near Gratwick Park.

Officials responded to the Niagara River in the area of Gratwick Park just before 5 p.m. Friday for a possible boating accident.

Upon arrival officials say a man jumped off a vessel and into the river for a swim.

The sheriff's office says 60-year-old Bryce D. Shipman of Grand Island was overtaken by the fast moving current and went under the water for a short time.

He was found moments later by the operator of the boat and was transported to DeGraff Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

No foul play is suspected.
