17-year-old girl killed in Cheektowaga car crash; 21-year-old charged with DWI, vehicular homicide

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WKBW) — Cheektowaga police say a 17-year-old girl was killed in a crash on Monday morning and a 21-year-old man is facing several charges including aggravated vehicular homicide and driving while intoxicated.

Police say Leena Velez of Buffalo was killed after the car she was in crashed into a utility pole and a building at Walden Avenue and Hoerner Avenue in Cheektowaga around 4 a.m. on Monday.

Police say another passenger, a 30-year-old Buffalo man was taken to ECMC to be treated for minor injuries.

The driver, 21-year-old Mkaipa Muya of Buffalo, was uninjured and initially charged with DWI and aggravated DWI.

Police added additional charges of aggravated vehicular homicide and reckless driving on Thursday.

Muya is being held on bail pending a felony hearing.
