A report from our Scripps sister station in Kansas City shed light on home birth.

Although the trend of giving birth at home is growing, more women say they're running into a problem: home births are not covered by their insurance company.

In the wake of this report, 7 Eyewitness News reached out to Western New York's top health insurance providers.

Each one tells us they do in fact cover home births under their respective networks.

Here's what each provider had to say:

  • BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York:

"BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York's provider network includes certified nurse midwives for members that would like to plan a home birth."

  • Independent Health:

"Independent Health does cover home births provided by Licensed Midwives; preauthorization is required."

  • Univera Healthcare:

"Univera Healthcare does have a coverage policy for home births conducted by a licensed Certified Nurse Midwife, provided certain criteria are met. Criteria include, but not limited to, the general good health of the mother:  There are no known risk factors."
