Would you believe that this cabbage was grown from seed?
Third grade students from Saint Mary’s Elementary School in Lancaster took part in a nationwide contest.
The challenge was to grow a cabbage plant from a seed starting in the late spring. The final weigh in is late summer.
Kara Hassenfratz is the overall New York State winner.
She took her seed home last spring and grew a 38 pound cabbage.
Kara will be presented with a check for $1000 from a Bonnie Plant Representative on Friday, April 7th.
Bonnie Plant is the company that provides this cabbage seeds to Saint Mary's Elementary school.
Around 13,000 schools nationwide take part in the program each year. Each state has 1 winner each year. This past summer, there were 90 entries from New York State.
