Local assemblyman Ray Walter (R,C,I-Amherst) is proposing a state bill that would ask the Department of Environmental Conservation to develop a study on battery use and disposal.

The bill would also require state leaders to create and recommend options for a statewide battery recycling program.

A recent recycling drive collected 2,500 pounds of household batteries from all across Western New York, according to Walter.

In a statement, Walter said, “after collecting nearly 2,500 pounds of batteries in our community throughout the month of April, it’s clear that this is a problem that needs to be addressed. I look forward to working with my legislative colleagues and our community partners toward our common goal of protecting our environment and ensuring New Yorkers are able to dispose of their batteries properly.”
