New York lawmakers are holding two upstate forums on heroin and opioid abuse.

A state Senate task force plans public forums Tuesday in Oneonta and Penn Yan.

Communities across the nation have been struggling to deal with the scourge of heroin and prescription opioids such as morphine, codeine and oxycodone. There were 914 overdose deaths in New York involving heroin and opiates in 2012.

The forums come a day after the mayor of Ithaca told The Associated Press he wants his central New York city to host the nation's first supervised injection facility as a way to combat heroin overdoses.

The forums will be held at SUNY Oneonta and the Penn Yan Middle School Auditorium.
