Today Erie County legislators announced they've asked Governor Cuomo to extend the pistol permit recertification deadline.
According to local legislators, "as of January 2nd, 2018, only 21,549 of over 50,000 affected permits have been renewed in Erie County."
The NY SAFE Act sets the renewal deadline at January 31st, 2018 for holders who received their permit before January 15th, 2013. This is the first year this requirement is in place.
If owners fail to renew their pistol permits, their license could be revoked and firearms could be taken away.
County Legislators Ed Rath, Joe Lorigo, Kevin Hardwick, and John Mills are spearheading this effort. They've also organized a series of pistol permit recertification outreaches to help people through the process.
