Key figure in state prison escape denied parole

Joyce Mitchell, the prison tailor who helped two convicted killers escape the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora two years ago, will remain behind bars for now.

A state board has denied Mitchell parole, guaranteeing she will stay locked up for at least more years.

Mitchell was involved in a love triangle with killers Richard Matt and David Sweat. She smuggled tools into the prison that they used to carry out an elaborate escape plot in June 2015, setting off a massive three-week manhunt.

Matt, who was serving a life sentence for killing a North Tonawanda businessman, was eventually shot and killed by police. Sweat was also shot but survived and is now back in prison.
