Kenilworth Volunteer Fire serves thousands of fish fry dinners during Lent

Posted

They turn a fire hall into a full service restaurant.

Kenilworth Volunteer Firefighters with the help of their ladies auxiliary and dozens of volunteers serve hundreds of fish fry dinners in just a three hour period. The company hosts a fish fry every Friday through Lent, with both dine-in and take out options.

13 years ago, the fire company's fish fry had humble beginnings. They began cooking in the garage of their hall, located at 84 Hawthorne Avenue, frying fish and fries in turkey fryers. Volunteers cooked about 75 meals a night. They now serve more than 700 dinners every Friday during Lent. At least 350 of those dinners are packed up and picked up for take out.

Proceeds from the fish fry aren't only to help the fire company and the residents of their district, they're donated to dozens of local charities and used to buy food for area food banks.

You can enjoy breaded, baked, battered fish, shrimp, scallops or chicken fingers from 4 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. You can call for take out orders after 4 p.m by calling (716) 838-1219.
