Keeping your pet safe during cold months

Posted at 6:46 AM, Nov 17, 2014

It's not just us humans we need to worry about when the temps drop. Pets are actually just as vulnerable.

Here are some reminders from the SPCA Serving Erie County to help keep your animals safe and warm this season:

  • Never let your dog off their leash in the snow or ice. They lose their scent on those surfaces and can easily get lost.
  • Always wipe their feet immediately after they come in. Ice or snow can get caught in their pads which could cause bleeding and irritation.
  • Limit the amount of time you let your pets outside. Dogs feel the cold just as much as humans do, despite their abundance of fur.
  • Outdoor shelters MUST be suitable for severe weather. Because of a New York State law, anyone who owns a dog that's left outside must provide them with appropriate shelter.
