Job Description : Calspan’s Crash Data Research Center provides technical expertise for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Crash Investigation Sampling System (CISS).   The Crash Investigation Engineer is responsible to provide technical support and feedback to field crash technicians nationwide.  The Crash Investigation Engineer is also responsible in ensuring that operations achieve quality measures and deliverables as required under the CISS contract.  Additionally the Engineer will lead/assist in proposal writing efforts for new business opportunities.   
Provide daily crash engineering support to assigned Field Crash Technicians and Zone Center Case Reviewers.  Identify gap areas of substandard technical performance and recommend related improvements.  Independently provide solutions to technical challenges and provide technical support to the customer when directed by management.
Conduct quality control review of crash investigation cases incorporating comparative evaluation of crash data documented in cases using hardcopy documentation, and photographic images with electronic data entry to ensure accurate correlation between data sources.
Analyze crash details to ensure proper depiction of crash circumstances shown on scene diagrams such as location of vehicle point of impact & final rest, and objects contacted.
Assess vehicle damage and apply principles related to the Collision Deformation Classification (CDC) guideline and the WinSmash speed reconstruction program
Evaluate photographic images using the CISS Digital Photography Guidelines Manual to ensure compliance with requirements.
Assess safety systems for performance and use. 
Resolve electronic edit checks.
Complete case review assignments within the timeframe stipulated by the Program Manager.
Analyze vehicular Electronic Data Recorder (EDR) outputs as related to
Lead and assist in proposal writing efforts for new business opportunities in CDRC.  Work with local and remote Universities and other resources in order to cultivate talent and capability necessary to expand the program
Assist with process improvement and quality control enhancements in the Zone Center Operations in order to improve the crash investigation case production and ensure the end product meets customer requirements.
Must maintain close communications especially at remote locations with the program management to ensure performance standards are met.  Work closely with the Buffalo based Zone Center team and especially with designated Case Reviewers.     
Job Qualifications : Preferred Education / Experience:
Engineering Bachelor’s Degree or
3+ years research experience in highway safety or
A combination of education and experience equivalent to above
Requirements:
Must attend an initial startup Basic Training cycle which will consist of five (5) training weeks. 
Ability to obtain US DOT credentials required.
 
Preferred Knowledge / Ability:  
Demonstrated leadership abilities
Extensive project management and project execution skills
Experience serving in multiple roles within highway safety research including data analysis, case review, and operations management
Excellent Technical Writing and Communication skills required
Problem solving / issue resolution capabilities
Ability to coach and instruct in an on-the-job setting
Strict adherence to NHTSA mandated protocol
Required travel approximately 25%-35%
