ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WKBW) - Jim Kelly wasn't quite ready to walk in the Kelly Tough 12K, but he was ready to start it and get all the runners ready for the race. Friday was the NFL Hall of Famer's first public appearance since having surgery on the cancer in his neck and mouth earlier this year.
“He is just, literally, taking this one day at a time,” said Jill Kelly, Jim’s wife off 22 years.
The 12k raises money and support for Hunter's Hope. It's an organization the Kelly's created after their son was born with a fatal genetic disease.
Jim, understandably was not up for an interview, just yet, but Jill says he's progressing.
“I'm in awe, really. At one point in time, with his second bout of cancer, he had a 5% chance of survival. You think about those things and then you look and you're like, ‘oh my goodness he's here right now,’” added Jill Kelly.
