An inmate in the custody of the Erie County Sheriff's Office was mistakenly released from jail Sunday night.
John Drake Jr. was sentenced to weekends in the holding center following his conviction for criminal contempt in February. Jail staff released him June 12, even though he was supposed to remain in custody on additional retainers.
"The staff of the holding center clearly violated several established and strict policies and procedure for inmate releases," said Erie County Jail Management Division Superintendent Thomas Diina. "Both civilian and staff members will be interviewed during the Professional Standard Division's investigation and pending the conclusion of the investigation, any necessary disciplinary actions will be taken."
Drake is back in custody and will remain at the holding center until a court hearing later this week.
