"My life's purpose is bigger than football" said former Bills receiver Anquan Boldin.

The recent NFL retiree sat down with Fellowship of Christian Athletes Magazine to explain why he choose this new path.

He told the magazine, "I feel drawn to make the larger fight for human rights a priority."

According to an interview on SiriusXM NFL Radio with Ross Tucker and Vic Carucci, it was the controversial events in Charlottesville, Virginia that moved Boldin to announce his retirement.

Football is far more than just touchdowns, but instills the value of teamwork. Boldin compared his longtime career to tackling social issues.

He said, "People from all different races, religions, and backgrounds working together for one shared goal. The core values in football are some of the most important you can learn in life. To always be there for the guy next to you and not let your fellow man down. You do whatever it takes to make sure your brother is okay."

Boldin's commitment to humanitarian work isn't all about national issues. Locally, the Anquan Boldin Foundation organizes food drives, shopping sprees, and awards academic scholarships.

"I get more out of giving than the people I help," said Boldin. "To see the smiles on people's faces, that alone brings me joy."
