Native Western New York natives are battling hurricane Irma as the storm slams the state of Florida.

Maurice Rosenberg, who relocated from WNY to the Boca Raton area has evacuated ot a friends home.

"My condo is actually located on a small island that's between the Ocean and the Intercostal Waterway, so that was the first area that had a mandatory evacuation."

Rosenberg tells Seven Eyewitness News that the power in the house he evacuated to has gone out, but they expect to play cards by candlelight to help pass the time.

Maureen Rivera traveled with her family to Walt Disney World last week, but with the cancelation of their flight home they've been forced to stay until the storm breaks.  She says her family can't wait to get home.

"I never thought snow would look so good.  Any thoughts of moving down here are now dashed."
