A call to the Erie County Sheriff's Office Saturday morning alerted deputies of skeletal remains of a man found in a wooded area in Marion J. Fricano Town Park in North Collins.
Deputy Mosier responded to the area and found a boot which he verified had contents that were part of a human skeleton.
Detectives, the Crime Scene Investigation Unit, the Erie County Medical Examiner's Office and an anthropology group from Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania were dispatched to excavate the scene.
The team worked at the site from the time of the original call around 11:10 a.m. on Saturday all the way through the night to dig up the remains. As of 10 a.m. Sunday, part of the skeletal remains have been dug up, but several more hours of excavation will be necessary to dig up the rest, according to officials.
The medical examiner is currently investigating.
The Erie County Sheriff's Office says the body appears to have been buried in the park for at least a decade.
