The Cornerstone Arena, the brand new facility for the Lockport Express Junior "A" team, hosted its first hockey game.
Thanks to a major donation from the Grigg Lewis Foundation, this 14-million dollar project is just about complete, bringing hockey back to Lockport for the first time since the Kenan Arena closed 17 years ago.
"Obviously the HARBORcenter downtown is a magnificent facility. We feel that we have the second best ice rink in the area," says hockey coach Frank Vecchio.
The state-of-the-art facility is not only a hockey haven, it could be a savior for the Lockport community. The Cornerstone Arena, once the site of a Sears, a Twin Fair and a supermarket, had been vacant for more than ten years.
The facility features two regulation size rinks, a restaurant, meeting rooms and retail space.
