Higgins working to increase access to lighthouse

The Buffalo Lighthouse is one of the oldest lighthouses on the Great Lakes.

The lighthouse was not accessible to the public for over a decade because of post-9/11 security requirements and its proximity to the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Buffalo station.

With help from then-Senator Hilary Clinton, Congressman Higgins secured $6.1 million to upgrade and consolidate Coast Guard facilities while opening up 4.25 acres of new public park space along the water and around the historic lighthouse in late 2011.

While this effort helped to open up the lighthouse to the public again, Congressman Higgins is working to make it even more accessible to make it another Outer Harbor destination point.

Plans include a linear park next to the base, which will provide some of the best views of Downtown Buffalo.
