Police are investigating after a Lackawanna officer's handgun was stolen from his private vehicle last week.

It is unknown where the gun was inside the car, but Chief Michel says the gun was the only thing taken.

The chief says this is an open investigation of a personnel matter.

According to Chief Michel, it is not uncommon for law enforcement officers to keep their weapons in their cars. He says there is no particular protocol when it comes to their weapons, other than the duty to preserve them.

Lackawanna Mayor Geoffrey Szymanski says there are a lot of unanswered questions around this incident.

There are no other details being released at this time.
