Members of an environmental group held a protest Saturday, hoping for change in Lackawanna.
Citizens United for a Clean Lackawanna Waterfront marched outside of Tecumseh Steel Saturday afternoon. The group hopes to bring attention to toxic waste they believe is buried there, contaminating Smoke Creek and draining into Lake Erie.
The group says drinking water for many communities, including Tonawanda, Amherst, and Buffalo, are at risk for contamination as a result.
Spokesman John Rath said, “It’s up to us, citizens everywhere, to start being aware of what’s going on and making sure that we stand up for what we believe in.”
Citizens United for a Clean Lackawanna Waterfront has started an online petition, asking that contaminants be removed from the waterfront.
