Have you noticed prices on some grocery staples creeping up again? It's not just beef prices taking a bigger bite out of your wallet.

Gas may be cheaper than in a decade, but a trip to the grocery store costs 30% more than it did 10 years ago, according to the government.

Shoppers Notice Higher Prices

Shoppers like Adalie Brown agree. "Chicken is up a bit," she said. But meat has really gone up a lot."

Shoppers had no problem naming items that cost a lot more than they used to.

"Mostly milk and dairy. And cheese. Cheese has gone way way up," one said. "Toilet paper is really expensive these days, paper towels, stuff like that," said another.

Yes, their hunches are correct. So if you, too, are juggling soaring grocery prices, you might want to know which prices are up the most.

The website24/7 Wall Street checked prices on 300 popular items, and found those with the steepest price hikes in the past 10 years.

Biggest Price Hikes

They include:

  • Eggs: Up 100 % since 2005, due to the bird flu.
  • Chicken: Ditto, for the same reason.
  • Ground beef: Up 65 percent, due to droughts and loss of fields.
  • Oranges: Up 43% due to fruit tree disease.
  • Apples: Up 41% due to bad weather.
  • Canned vegetables: Up 40% due to droughts.
  • Pet food: Up 37 percent, because of demand for better ingredients.
  • Bacon: Up 35 percent, due mostly to a swine virus.
  • Rice and pasta: Up 30 percent due to drought.

Your best bet is often to stock up on non perishables when they are on sale.

If you find a half price sale on canned vegetables, you may want to grab a bunch of them, so you don't waste your money.
