Governor Andrew Cuomo is now directing the D.E.C to issue a heightened drought warning for Western New York.

In response to the governor's executive order, D.E.C. Commissioner Basil Seggos has issued a Drought Warning for the following counties. Allegany, Cattaraugus, Cayuga, Chautuaqua, Chemung, Livingston, Monrie, Niagara, Onondaga, Ontario, Orleans, Oswego, Seneca, Schuyler, Steuben, Tompkins, Wayne, Wyoming and Yates.

"Residents throughout the state should continue to conserve water whenever possible during the coming months," said Governor Cuomo.

Here are some conservation tips homeowners can use to reduce outdoor water usage:

  • Fix dripping and leaking faucets
  • Raise your lawn mower cutting height
  • Water lawns and gardens on alternate mornings instead of every day
