Four infant deaths related to unsafe sleeping

Over the weekend, Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz tweeted out a picture of files on his desk that contained information on recent child deaths.

Last year, The Erie County Commissioner of Health issued a press release on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome due to the cold.

"Parents and caregivers need to be aware of the tremendous risks of having an infant sleep with another individual in an adult bed or couch or in a 'face-down' position."

Dr. Gale Burnstein also added that, "Infants cannot roll over or uncover blankets from their face, placing them at great risk of suffocation."

Parents are urged to make sure that their infant is always on its back to prevent SIDS and that you should you be cautious sleeping with a baby. Sharing a bed with more than one person increases the risk of the baby being trapped and smothered.
