First responders compete to recruit blood donors

Posted

Batavia fire, law enforcement and emergency medical services personnel are competing to see which group can recruit the most blood donors.

A blood shortage has the American Red Cross facing a critical need for blood donations. First responders in Batavia are partnering with the Red Cross and competing in the first Battle of the Badges to encourage people in the community to make sure blood is always available.

Battle of the Badges is taking place in conjunction with Batavia's 11th annual Mega Blood Drive, the community's largest blood drive of the year. Both events will be held August 11 from 12-7 p.m. at the Quality Inn & Suites, 8250 Park Rd., Batavia.

Donors of all blood types are urgently needed. This comes at a time when blood and platelets are being distributed to hospitals faster than donations are coming in. Right now, the Red Cross has less than a five-day blood supply on hand.

The Red Cross is thanking donors by emailing them a $5 Amazon.com gift card claim code.

To make an appointment for Battle of the Badges, download the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
