A suspected grease fire could be to blame for a fire inside a west side grocery store.

The fire broke out around 10:30 p.m. Thursday inside Shawarma Grill and Groceries at 139 Grant Street.

A neighbor who talked with the business owner tells 7 Eyewitness News that the store closed about 30 minutes before the fire broke out.  The owner may have forgot to turn off a deep fryer.

The bulk of the fire was contained to the first floor grocery store.

Around 16 residents from apartments above the store were evacuated temporarily and later were allowed to return to their homes.

Damages were estimated to be $20,000.

The official cause is under investigation.
