After years of raising money, the Alix Rice Peace Park Foundation has received the final funds it needs to build a skate park in honor of a teen killed by a drunk driver.
The foundation was selected to receive two grants totaling $128,888 from the Regional Economic Development Council. That brings the total raised by the foundation created in honor of Alix Rice to around $360,000.
Rice was hit and in July 2011 by a drunk driver. Since then, the foundation has worked to build a skate park in her memory.
The foundation is working to finalize an agreement with the Town of Amherst to create the park at the Northtown Center for the California-style skate park. They hope to break ground in the spring of 2015.
Fundraisers will continue, as more money will be needed for regular maintenance at the skate park.
