A fire hydrant in Buffalo couldn't be used to fight a fire Monday because it was broken. The threading had cracked.
Each community has different rules and regulations when it comes to its fire hydrants and how often they are checked to make sure they are in proper working order. But you could be charged with "tampering" if you try and check yourself.
If you ever notice water leaking from a hydrant or water pooling near its base you should call the water department right away.
