August 31st is International Overdose Awareness Day and there are events scheduled for Buffalo including a candlelight vigil in LaSalle Park at 6:30 p.m.  The vigil is sponsored by the Erie County Opiate Epidemic Task Force's Family and Consumer Support Advocacy group.

International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) is a global event held on August 31st each year and aims to raise awareness of overdose and reduce the stigma of a drug-related death.  It is also a time to remember the victims who have lost their lives to the disease of addiction.

With the number of deaths rising due to the opioid crisis, the message this year is overdose deaths are preventable if intervention is sought early on.
