The Erie County Sheriff's Office is issuing a special alert for Clarence residents over a phone scam.

The imposter tells the victim he is from the sheriff's office and claims the individual failed to show up for grand jury.

According to police, the imposter states that a sheriff's deputy will be arriving at the person's residence with a summons for criminal contempt. The scam artist tells the victim all of this can be resolved over the phone if a cash card from a local convenient store is purchased and then the card numbers and access codes are provided.

If anyone receives a call, the Erie County Sheriff's Office asks you to record the number and call them immediately at 716-858-2903.
